Split-Window Dream, A Poem
60
Lee Street
off of Manchester
near Edgewood Cemetery
and my dead.
In the driveway
of number six Lee,
though,
is my split-window dream.
Faded black and
dull chrome but
the engine still starts –
it gets moved from driveway
to backyard
to driveway
regularly –
and I don’t know
what type of car it is.
30s or 40s
too smooth
and elegant to be a 50s (
I think)
but she’s beautiful.
She’s like an Elvgren pin-up,
smiling and sexy
and looking like
it’ll be just a
little
too much to handle.
But I want to handle it,
I want
to pop the hood
look at the engine;
give the body
a fresh coat of paint,
fix the chrome and
check out the interior.
And sitting
in the cab of my
trash truck
all I can think about
is rolling down
the main drag
in my split-window dream.

Some of the imagery such as Lee Street, Manchester, Edgewood Cemetery are quite strange to me; but I loved the interplay of word-pictures for instance, split-window, elegant to be a 50sdream and fresh coat of paint.
